Blueberries are members of the same family as cranberries, bilberries and grouseberries, and almost all require damp and acid soil conditions to thrive (If azaleas and Rhododendrons grow well in your soil - then blueberries will do so as well). Blueberries bushes range in size from a few centimeters to a few metres, and are grouped into Northern highbush, Northern half-high and Southern highbush varieties. The berries range in colour from sky blue to inky blue, and even pinkish - but all are sweet with variable acidity. Fruiting periods vary from May to August in the northern hemisphere.
Most blueberries are self-fertile - but like many crops - the quality, and quantity, of the crop is improved having another plant of a different variety nearby as a pollinating partner.
