Betula

(Birch)

Birches make some of the most attractive deciduous trees for any garden, growing to a maximum of 15metres. Striking colours of white, pink, or brown bark, plus super autumn colour and their graceful canopy which casts very little shade, explains why they have become a favourite of gardeners and designers alike. Betula are fast-growing and hardy, preferring a moist but well-drained soil in full sun. Although B. pendula, (the Silver Birch), is native to the British Isles, the others mainly originate in either northern Asia or the United States. Selected cultivars of the Silver Birch (such as 'Jacquemontii' and 'Doorenbos') are amongst the most sought after garden trees.
