Winter Growing Bulbs

A very exciting range of bulbs! Introduced to us by our friend and fellow nurseryman Rupert Bowlby. Most of the species originate from the winter rainfall areas of southern Africa. They should not be considered as hardy although there are many instances of them over wintering in sheltered well drained situations. By far the safest way is to grow them indoors in pots. The range of colours and fragrances is breathtaking, they add a real cheer to the early part of the year. We shall be expanding the range considerably over coming seasons.

Autumn Flowering Bulbs

This much overlooked group of bulbs deserve to be planted much more often. They are seldom offered in any variety because of their short dormant season. We have been putting together this range for several years. With a little planning, it is nearly possible to have bulbs in flower in the garden year round.

The National Erythronium Collection

Since 2002 we have been proud to hold the National Erythronium Collection on site. Currently at 110 varieties, we open the collection to viewing when it is in flower.

Whilst these varieties really belong with the rest of the spring flowering bulbs in our Autumn Bulb List we find that these have a shorter dormancy and will establish much more successfully if planted in this season.

Because of the huge and increasing interest in this family we have separated them into their own section. The varieties listed here are the examples of Amaryllidaceae that can be happily transplanted at this time of year. We have other varieties listed in our other bulb lists for different dispatch seasons that have differing transplanting times.
